The Manga Most NGE Fans Have Never Read Most video essays about Neon Genesis Evangelion are about the anime. This one isn’t. There is a 14-volume manga adaptation of Neon Genesis Evangelion drawn by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, the same man who designed every character in the original series, that ran from 1994 to 2013. That’s 18…

Quick answer: Yes — if you want a complete, two-volume assassin thriller that treats its violence like a debt instead of a spectacle. Hirohiko Araki, creator of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, personally recommended this debut, and after two volumes, I understand exactly why. This review accompanies my full video breakdown of Smother Me — watch it…
Twenty years ago, fourteen soldiers marched out to hold back an invasion that would have ended their empire. Seven of them came home as legends. The other seven quietly disappeared from the official record, remembered, if at all, as cowards and traitors. Except that is not what actually happened. Ubel Blatt, the completed dark fantasy…
I watched the Elfen Lied anime in high school. Late at night, on a screen that was definitely too small, in a room that was definitely too quiet. The opening sequence, Klimt’s paintings, Lilium playing, and then a trail of bodies, hit me in a way I was not prepared for at sixteen. I carried…
There’s a version of this review where I open with the word “hilarious” and you immediately assume I’m reviewing the wrong genre. The Fable, by Katsuhisa Minami, is a manga about a professional assassin. It is also, chapter for chapter, one of the funniest things I’ve read this year. Those two facts should not coexist….
Somewhere in the history of manga fandom, a Japanese publisher held an actual funeral – Buddhist rites, incense, a posthumous name given to the deceased – for a character who only ever existed in ink. That’s not an urban legend. It happened in 1970, and it happened because of a boxing manga called Ashita no…
A blind samurai and a one-armed samurai walk into an arena. Neither hesitates. Both are holding real blades instead of the wooden ones that make these contests survivable. That is the opening image of Shigurui, and before you get context, before you get names, before you get any of the fifteen volumes that explain how two…
There is a specific kind of protagonist that most stories do not have the nerve to give you. Not misunderstood. Not secretly redeemable. Not someone who finds himself somewhere in the third act and turns things around. Just a predator, someone who gets beaten down, humiliated, broken to nothing, and gets back up. Not out…
What Is Battle Royale, Actually? Before The Hunger Games, before Fortnite, before the entire survival-game genre calcified into a familiar set of tropes, there was Battle Royale. Originally a novel by Koushun Takami published in 1999, the manga adaptation illustrated by Masayuki Taguchi ran from 2000 to 2005 across 15 volumes and 114 chapters in…
If you are looking for the best completed dark fantasy manga to read right now, Claymore by Norihiro Yagi belongs near the top of that list. It ran for thirteen years, concluded on its own terms, and managed to do something that genuinely few dark action manga achieve: it built an entire twenty-seven volume architecture…
What if the most dangerous thing about meeting someone wasn’t falling in love with them, but having to spend the rest of your life knowing exactly what you walked away from? That question is at the heart of Memories of Emanon, a single-volume seinen manga based on Shinji Kajio’s award-winning 1983 short story, illustrated with…
